Creation Of The Universe

Was the universe created or did it always exist?

How old do we think the universe is?

The Bible tells us in the Genesis account of creation that the universe began at a particular moment; In the beginning...(Genesis 1:1). Before that moment nothing existed, there was no universe, no time, no matter, and no laws of physics. At that moment, God began His creation by bringing the universe into existence, which He designed and created for a purpose. He spent six days preparing His creation and then rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2).

The Bible doesn't say specifically whether the earth (or universe) is young or old. We get a young universe by adding the Biblical chronologies from the creation of Adam (on day 6). This would be about 6,000 years ago. The Bible does imply that the universe (and the earth) was created in six days and Exodus 20:8 further defines that it was created in six literal days. Interestingly, 2 Peter 3:5 says the universe is old. It must be noted that God could most certainly create the universe old or young, as He so desires.

We now know that time, space, and matter all had a beginning. Einstein's theories of general and special relativity are now widely accepted as fact and supported by observable evidence. Due to the effects of time dilation, vast amounts of space could be crossed in a short span of time that could actually span billions of years. Since time itself did not exist before the creation of the universe, we must acknowledge that God existed before the universe and time began. He entered it after He created it, from outside of space/time. Because God is able to transcend space/time, the age of the universe becomes irrelevant in respect to God and the Bible. Our Creator can even transcend the past, present and future all at once.

Sadly, all too often we see the age of the universe argued and forget what creation is all about in the first place. The Genesis account is about the creation of the universe as a home for the earth and the earth as a home for man. God created man and put him upon the earth, knowing that one day, He would come to earth as a Man and reveal His true love for us as our Redeemer. He knows what the future will hold because He is able to transcend the past, present and future. Therefore, He has created hope for each one of us. It is not about creation, it is all about Him, who created it all and put us here on the earth that we may have hope in our Creator, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
