Bethany

Bethany
Meaning - house of dates
A village on the southeastern side of the Mount of Olives
(Mark 11:1), about 3 kilometers east of Jerusalem along the road to Jericho.
The name is derived from the palm-trees which grew there. Bethany is probably
best known as the residence of Lazarus and his family. Here Jesus worked
one of his greatest miracles, raising Lazarus from the dead. It is now known
by its Arabic name el-Azariyeh, which means "place of Lazarus,"
or simply Lazariyeh. Today it is a village, containing about twenty families.
