Capernaum

Capernaum (Kefer Nahum) was a small fishing village near the northwestern shores of the Sea of Galilee, about 10 miles (16 km) from Tiberius and two 2.5 miles (4 kM) from where the Jordan enters the Sea. It lies along a major road between Damascus, Syria. Capernaum forms the Evangelical Triangle with Capernaum, Chorazin, and Bethsaida. These were the places where Jesus performed many of His miracles. It was where Jesus set up is ministry and performed many miracles and preached His messages to the people. He sometimes taught at the Synagogue at Capernaum on the Sabbath as mentioned in Mark 1:21. It was from this city that Jesus called several of His disciples (Peter, James, Andrew, John, and Matthew).

Capernaum is where He and His family relocated to after being rejected in His hometown of Nazareth. (Matt 4:12-16). The apostle Peter lived lived in Capernaum, where his wife and mother in law were from. (Mark 1:29-30). Unfortunately for Capernaum, they did not listen well to the words of Jesus and chose to reject Him (Matthew 11:23-24). In fulfillment of His prophesy, Capernaum ended up in ruins, as it still is today.

The name of the archaeological ruins at Capernaum is called Tel Hum, located about 2.5 miles from where the Jordan River enters the Sea of Galilee. Above Capernaum is the mountain of the Beatitudes where Jesus gave His famous Sermon on the Mount. A white limestone, fourth century synagogue stands in Capernaum and is believed to be the location of the first century synagogue built by the Roman centurion who was stationed in Capernaum (Luke 7:5).
