Dan

Meaning - a judge

Dan is a city in the northern territory of Dan located near one of the sources of the Jordan and near the southwestern slopes of Mount Hermon. It was strategically situated on the road from Damascus in Syria to Tyre. Its earlier name was Laish (Judges 18:29; called Leshem in Joshua 19:47).

Dan is first mentioned in Genesis 14:14 as being the northern limit that Abraham pursued Lot's captors; "he went in pursuit as far as Dan". It later became a place of idolatrous worship during the priesthood of Moses’ grandson, Jonathan. This was continued by his descendants (Judg 18:30). The city finally became a national center of idolatry under Jeroboam I (1 Kgs 12:29-33). Dan flourished again in the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

The ancient site is Tell el-Qadi (Tell Dan). Archaeological excavations have revealed a series of prosperous cities.
