Elim

Meaning - trees

Elim was the second place the Israelites encamped after crossing the Red Sea. It is an oasis with twelve wells or springs and 70 palms.

The actual site of Elim still remains a mystery. Some have placed it at Wadi Ghurundel, about 60 Kilometers south of Suez. This distance seems to be unlikely as it would require an additional five or six days of travel (based upon the Israelites covering about 17 kilometers per day and Marah being associated with the smaller bitter lake). The Bible says it was three days journey from the location of the Red Sea crossing to Marah, a bitter lake (Exodus 15:22-23). From Marah, their next stop was Elim (Exodus 15:27). A good fit would be an an oasis called Musa Uyun, about 10 kilometers south of Suez.
