Gilgal

Gilgal

Meaning - circle or rolling

Gilgal was Israel's base of operations after crossing the Jordan (Jos 4:19). Twelve commemorative stones were set up when the Israelite's camped there (Jos 4:20). It was the place where the Israelites were circumcised. Also, the place where they had their first Passover after crossing into Canaan and where the manna ceased. From Gilgal Joshua led Israel against Jericho.

There are actually several places in the Bible that have this name. The most popular is the place northeast of Jericho. The precise location of which is still unknown, although possibly near the site of Khirbet el-Mefjir, about 2 kilometers north east of Jericho.
