Hippos

Hippos

Hippos was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis. The road through the Decapolis region to Damascus passed near it. It is located on a hill approximately two miles inland from the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

It was given to Herod the Great by Caesar Augustus and did not come to prominence until the Roman period. It may have been the place Jesus was referring to when He said, "A city set on a hill cannot be hidden" (Matt 5:14).
